The Stan Kenton Orchestra and the Nova Jazz Orchestra

Double Feature ~ Volume 2 is a two-disc collection of big band jazz music, and includes an 18-page booklet with notes about both Kenton and W. A. “Bill” Mathieu, who started writing music for The Stan Kenton Orchestra as a teenager, and in 1959 — at the age of 21 — joined the Orchestra as its staff arranger. Mathieu himself wrote the notes for disc two in 2011. He describes his inner call, at 13 years old, to write music for Stan Kenton; approaching Kenton the following year; working with the “Old Man”; and the influence Kenton had on his life and music.

Disc One features Stan Kenton’s adept and fiery 1959 band flashing brilliance at the Blue Note in Chicago and New Jersey’s Red Hill Inn. A very diverse & appealing list of eighteen tracks, memorably performed! Mathieu arranged the tracks below.

4. What Is This Thing Called Love
14. This Is Always
17. Willow Weep for Me

Disc Two features the music of Mathieu, the architect of Kenton’s 1959 classic and highly praised Standards in Silhouette LP. Mathieu arranged all the tracks on this disc, and composed five (starred below) — a bounty of forgotten pieces written for Stan’s orchestra and never released on Capitol Records. Newly and superbly recorded by the Nova Jazz Orchestra!
